Uganda Rotary International Project
A documentary video of the Rotary International project in Uganda is now live on the Internet.
The Rotary Club of Crescent City and the Del Norte High School Interact Club joined the
Rotary Club of Kololo to match funds with the Rotary Foundation. These funds provided textbooks
and library books for St. Paul's High School in the Rushooka Ntungamo District in Uganda.

Debunking
On June 27th, President Donna became Past President Donna, and Jay Freeman became President Jay.
Keeping with Rotary tradition, a hilarious debunking ceremony provided the send-off of President
Donna, who celebrated her real-life 25th wedding anniversary "divorcing" herself from her role as
President and marrying (again) her true love, Kevin. This fairy-tale ending includes the handing of the
leadership torch to our worthy Rotarian Jay Freeman.

Dr. Tom Martinelli Provides Updates on Physician Recruitment Activities
On June 18th, Rotarian Rodney Jahn hosted Past President, Former Rotarian Dr. Tom Martinelli.
Dr. Martinelli is the Public Health Officer for Del Norte County, and he has taken a lead role
on the Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee. In conjunction with the Wild Rivers
Community Foundation, the Committee has put together a scholarship to help pay off medical school
loans to qualifying physicians who choose to establish practice in Del Norte.

Rotarian Dave Zuber on His Tour of Ethiopia
On June 11th, Rotarian Dave Zuber shared slides from his recent travels in Ethiopia.

"Sexting" in Del Norte County
On June 4th, Rotarian Bob Cochran hosted District Attorney Investigator A. C. Fields.
Investigator Fields shared information on the presence and problems of teenagers "sexting" in
Del Norte County.

Ron Sandler Presents Shelter Box Project
On May 28th, Rotarian Ron Sandler explained the Rotary Shelter Box project. Shelter Box
provides immediate housing and emergency supplies during disasters. For $1,000 per box,
a homeless person or family can be provided with housing until more permanent accommodations
are arranged. Rotary's Shelter Box project has come to the aid of victims of tsunamis,

shares his thoughts on the news in Del Norte County, what makes us interesting and special, and how his
personal philosophy of the role of local newspapers shapes the paper in our newsstands today.

California North Coast Geotourism Project
On April 23rd, Northcoast Geotourism Project Coordinator Maria deChadenedes shared information
with Rotarians about how to nominate favorite activities and destinations in our area to help
"geotourists" find Del Norte County an attractive place to visit. "Geotourism" is tourism that
sustains or enhances the geogrpahic character of a place--its environment, culture, aesthetics,
heritage, and the well-being of its residents.

Family Resource Center Leaders Irene Tynes and Jennifer England
On April 16th, Irene Tynes and Jennifer England, board chair and Executive Director respectively
of the Family Resource Center, provided updates on progress and programs at the new center located
at the site of the old Pacific Market. The building was initiated by First 5 Del Norte and continues
as its primary function to provide opportunities to babies and children ages 0-5--and now also to their
older siblings, parents, and grandparents.

Meagan Webb Presents Kathryn the Scottish Highlander
On April 2nd, Del Norte High School senior Meagan Webb shared information on her Scottish Highlander,
Kathryn. As an added treat, she brought samples of this type of meat for all to taste. (She
left Kathryn intact at home.) Mmmmm! Delicious.

Dr. Greg Duncan Visits Honduras
On March 26th, Dr. Greg Duncan shared a slide show highlighting his recent trip to Honduras where he
provided orthopedic surgery to poor, isolated communities. Dr. Duncan has visited Honduras for this purpose
in past years, too. President Donna Sund recognized Dr. Duncan as Rotarian of the Month of February for his
services to the people of Honduras.

Interact!
Annually, the Interact Club sends members on a raid to the Crescent City Rotary Club meeting. They take
over the leadership and truly make certain that "no good deed goes unpunished!" As members, we are very
proud of our Interact Club and willingly support their good works in the community through this process.

Normal Aging or Dementia?
On March 12th, Carol L. Pickard, Regional Operations Manager for Sunwest Management, made a presentation
on the topic "Normal Aging Versus Dementia: Do You Know the Difference?" Ms. Pickard was hosted by
Rotarian Bob Berkowitz.

VIP Visitor: Paula Campbell, CSBA
On March 5th, Rotarians appreciated a visit from the President of the Board of Directors for
the California School Boards Association. Following a morning spent touring Del Norte Schools,
Paula Campbell shared insights on the importance of our public schools and experiences from her
own childhood in public schools. Local school board member Rotarian Bob Berkowitz, also a member of the
CSBA Board of Directors, hosted Paula Campbell, along with Rotarian Patti Vernelson who once
worked for CSBA.

Here at Crescent City Rotary Club fellowship happens weekly over lunch. Members and guests enjoy the hot meal catered by Chef Steve Wakefield of Northwoods Restaurant, served buffet style.
